The Fall 2021 Colloquium | Evolution of Art Criticism

CALL FOR SPEAKERS

The Korean Society of Art Theories (KSAT) is pleased to announce the Fall 2021 Colloquium to be held as an online event on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021. The theme of this year’s KSAT Colloquia is art criticism. Following the Spring 2021 Colloquium | Pedigree of Art Criticism, which traced the concepts and roles of art criticism from the past to the present, the Fall 2021 Colloquium | Evolution of Art Criticism seeks to explore contemporary art criticism’s diverse possibilities suggested in previous discussions. Those who wish to speak at the Colloquium are invited to submit applications pursuant to the guidelines described in this announcement.

Evolution of Art Criticism

The forms, contents, subjects, and scopes of critical writings on artwork have varied with the passage of time from the ancient era to the present as well as across different geographical regions ranging from Asia to Europe. These temporal and geographical variations reflect the cultural traits and intellectual traditions specific to each period and each locale. Critical writings on artwork in varying forms and modes have evolved over time throughout the world. Examples are found in 18th century leaflets that criticized Paris Salon, Joseon Dynasty period poems and letters critiquing artwork, 20th century museum exhibition catalogues, magazines published by independent groups of artists and critics, and book reviews on Amazon.com. Critical writings may also take the form of a philosophical note, a scholarly paper, a newspaper or magazine article, or a blog post. They collectively demonstrate how the forms and modes of art criticism have evolved. Art criticism is now bound with methodologies derived from psychoanalysis, formal analysis, feminism, postmodernism, satirical devices, and the like, allowing it to be regarded as an independent sphere separate from art creation and art market making while closely interacting with them. On the other hand, today’s art criticism has become an open forum where the public can share their artistic feelings and experiences alongside the art critics who lead formal discourses and the museum curators who put forth new perspectives. Some even say that art criticism approaches a state of chaos under a deluge of online reviews and information, which may be characterized as the state of “proletarianization.”

Against this backdrop, KSAT organizes the Fall 2021 Colloquium under the title of “Evolution of Art Criticism.” Interpreting art criticism broadly as critical writings on art, we seek to introduce research works of diverse perspectives regarding the evolutionary changes in the concept, form, methodology, and context of art criticism as well as the state of contemporary art criticism. We anticipate participation by many researchers who have an interest in these topics.
